The forgetting curve: what happens if you don't review
The forgetting curve describes a common pattern: recall often drops quickly after learning, then declines more slowly. The exact rate varies by material, learner, and how memory is tested.
Reviewing after a gap gives you another chance to retrieve the material. Repeating that process at wider intervals is the basic idea behind spaced repetition.
Why cramming your reviews fails
Cramming can make material feel familiar because you have just seen it. Spacing reviews over time makes each session a clearer check of what you can still retrieve.
That difference between immediate familiarity and later recall is why a review schedule matters more than simply counting repetitions.
A practical schedule
There is no single best interval for every learner or subject. Use this three-review schedule as a starting point, then adjust it from your results:
- First, the next day: cover the material and try to recall or solve it.
- Second, one week later: try again without looking at the previous solution.
- Third, two to three weeks before the exam or about one month later: check what still needs work.
The intervals do not need to be exact. The important part is giving the next review a date.
Adjust intervals by results
Not everything deserves the same interval. The rule every spaced-repetition system shares is simple:
- Recalled it → double the next interval (1 day → 3 days → 1 week → 2 weeks…)
- Missed it → reset the interval (again tomorrow)
- Two clean successes in a row → it graduates off the list
This keeps weaker items in rotation more often while giving stronger items a longer gap.
Applying it to problem review
Spaced repetition also works with problems that have worked solutions. Instead of flipping a card, cover the solution and solve the problem again on blank paper.
You need three things: a list of missed problems, a schedule for the next attempt, and a record of the result. Paper can handle this, while an app can reduce the work of sorting and scheduling a growing list.

Common mistakes
- Read-only reviews: even with perfect spacing, passive re-reading loses most of the benefit. Review = re-solving.

- Letting misses slide: extending the interval on an item you missed cements the gap. A miss always resets.
